A: Mostly secondary feathers on both wings are broken. RD1 fracture site appears static. Weight and body condition are still doing well. Will try and reduce stress in new mew.

perch and grounded, caught from ground. Regurged on initial flight. Condition static.
Feet less than ideal. Fix perching on shelter box, consider other options to diversify
texture. 
[25526] / Brancher / UNK - Low flights back and forth across enclosure between adjustable
perches. Flights are labored and loud, inconsistent in quality. Feather damage hindering
flight. Clung to wall a couple times. RD1 static.

O: Weighed both. Weights static. Feather check for 25-526 - lots of broken/tipped
flight feathers on both wings, possibly due to enclosure.

A: Both static. Prioritize fixing perching options to attempt to aid Volo's feet.
Consider moving them into NF. 

P: Recheck both in 1 month. Discuss other housing options. Repair MM2 in meantime.

Neither approached the food after dropping. 

O: Raked enclosure. Dropped 405 g of pigeon, venison, and chick. Collected 1 cast
and 52 g of scrap (primarily frozen squirrel leg and tail). Collected 4 feathers.
1 feather (secondary) fallen off with some barbs broken, remaining 3 were broken
off coverts. 

A: BAR. [25526] flying around much more frequently, has uncoordinated flight. [25526]
breaking/losing feathers.

S: Bird standing and walking normally.  Can see that RD1 is rotated medially when bird is standing.

O: Reviewed x-rays: bird appears to have already healed fracture of the RD1, can see bony callus, distal end of digit slightly displaced causing the rotation.  No swelling/bruising or signs of fresh trauma seen on exam, RD1 feels very stable on palpation.
Food: SF 410g

A: Suspect older injury on RD1, already healed and does not appear to be causing issues, digit not very important in a vulture so no concerns for this affecting releasability long term.  

P: Continue to monitor ambulation, watch for signs of bumblefoot and changes in RD1 when bird is caught up.

S: Standing evenly with both feet and RD1 fully extended.

O: Took rads of RD1. Placed in crate in ICU.

A: RD1 appears to have broken at some point as it appears older on rads. Suspect that bird might have broken toe on wiring. Currently putting pressure and using foot normally. RD1 also sits normally when bird stands. Will have AD assess rads a look at bird before taking back down.

P: AD review before taking back down.

O: Caught both up for weights. Volo has some slight bumble foot on foot pads, applied
Prep H to both feet. Feather checked 526. Noted RD1 bent on baby. Secured in crate
and brought up to hospital for rads.

A: Volo feet appeared very slightly worsened. 25-526 appears to have broken or dislocated
RD1 at some point.

A: BAR. Volo doesn't seem to like to be near roommate. Was flying around trying to
find a different place to land a few times.

Laborious flight with a lot of flapping. Clung to wall on one pass. On one pass,
failed to maintain height and landed on ground after pawing at wall. Would run away
when approached. Returned to back perch. Lots of downy feathers protruding from neck.


O: Hose cleaned. Dropped 436 g of rabbit and chick. Collected 9 casts and 116 g of
scrap (rabbit fur and leg, bone). 

A: BAR. Did not rush to feeding platform this time. No biting observed. [25526] struggles
when flying.

Then hopped up onto the further food platform and started eating.

A: BAR. Did not seem to have been interested in pumpkin enrichment. Kept their distance
from each other.

pushing them off the perch. Made four full passes. Flight would dip a bit, then gain
altitude again. When food dropped, would quickly fly to back feeding platform before
[25526] could get there. 
[25526] / Brancher / UNK - Standing on back perch, nipped at Volo's neck once while
being pushed. Stayed on ground for a bit, then flew up to front perch when approached.
Flight laborious. Flew back to ground in back. Approached back feeding platform when
food dropped, but didn't get there before Volo. Was more cautious than before about
approaching feeding platform while Volo was on it. Has a bunch of downy feathers
protruding from neck, likely from being bitten. 

O: Bucket cleaned. Dropped 421 g of chick, rabbit, and rat. Collected 8 casts and
42 g of scrap (mostly fur and bone). Dropped 2 quarter pieces of a pumpkin for enrichment.


A: BAR. Likely not getting along very well as evidenced by interactions seen and
down protruding from [25526]'s neck. See above for details.

bedding clean and dry.

A: BAR. [25526] having trouble gaining height/lift while flying; flying lower than
roommate. Birds fighting with each other over food.

perch. When food was dropped, they both flew to the ground just before the food platform
that is inside of the live prey well.

platform near the door.

food was dropped and both birds on ground, it bit at the adult and then hopped onto
the food platform inside the live prey well.

in live prey well. Also flared, but did not try to get up to food platform. Hopped
up to edge of live prey well instead and then to food platform in the front and started
eating

O: Bucket cleaned and changed water. Checked blankets in crate but they were clean
and dry so I did not change then out. Removed a few casts from cage and 33 g of fur/bone
scrap (rabbit leg). Dropped 492 g of rabbit, rabbit skulls (2), and chick. Remove
one broken in blood flight feather. Watched both for a few minutes and did not see
any active bleeding/blood dripping from them or on the platforms where they were
standing.  

A: Both BAR. Broken blood feather is likely from 526 as I did not notice any missing
when Volo flared his wings. However, 526 does have a few gaps from missing/broken
feathers when he flared his wings. Looks more like a normal broken feather as opposed
to a pinched feather.

approached and flew to back perch. After exiting enclosure, checked and saw eating
from front food platform instead.

When cleaning the back it flew to the front but flew in circles a few times before
landing on the covered perch. Then flew to the back when dropping food. It started
to bite at the brancher when it was eating and they both flared at eachother but
ultimately ended up on the same platform eating.
[25526] / Brancher / UNK - Started on the back high perch. Flew to the front covered
perch, during the cleaning of the back. When moving back to the front to drop food,
it flew to the back. When dropping food, it hissed and then flew straight to the
platform that is inside of the live prey well. The adult came and started biting
it, it hissed and flared and they fought on the ground. Both ended up sharing the
same food platform.

were getting close to eachother and flaring. But it quickly flew back to the back
perch. During cleaning, it was changing between the front and back perch. Once food
was dropped it went to the ground and started biting at the Brancher. The adult ended
up taking over the food platform.
[25526] / Brancher / UNK - Upon entrance it dropped to the ground and walked to the
front of the cage. Then as walking to the front, it flew to the back perch. It was
hissing on the back perch and was the first to drop to the food. It also hissed on
the perch but when the adult came, it started to attack it and eventually switched
to the food platform that is closest to the gate.

One sample appeared normal, the other was a reddish/brown. (Color a bit darker than

but they generally ate without fighting.

Reviewed footage from past 24hr - Volo went directly to food dropped on window perch yesterday and baby remained away on ground. Adjustments appear to have helped. -TL

growling. After releasing Volo, baby jumped up to food platform somewhat expectantly
but overall avoided us. 

O: Caught Volo for weight and checked over for wounds from baby - only a couple very
superficial spots found. Parts of plantar aspects both feet softening and pink -
applied prep H to both. Moved food platforms to opposite sides of enclosure and back
from window perch so baby cannot use them to jump up. Placed camera. Bucket cleaned.
Collected 4 casts, 7g bone scrap. Dropped 338g squirrel pigeon and chick - half on
window perch and half on turf mat by door.

A: BAR. Volo only slightly down in weight but has fairly poor BCS. 

P: Pull and replace camera EOD to monitor baby's behavior with food, continue adjusting
enclosure PRN. 9/23 - take ladder in to check and repair Volo's perch, window perches.
10/6 - Weigh Volo unless more food stealing is observed sooner.

I returned about 3 minutes later and saw the brancher trying to get food out of Volo's
beak.  When they saw me, the brancher released the food. About 10 minutes later,
I did see Volo eating on its own.

A: Baby has broken a lot of primary feathers since being placed in mew. Broken off
feathers were found mainly in back corner of mew, so wondering if bird is hitting
wings against walls to cause feather damage. Bird will end up staying with us longer
for feathers to regrow.
